Frequently Asked Questions
How do I apply?
If you’re in a NYC public high school grades 9-12, apply to Saturday Program by filling out a written application*. Copies of artwork may be attached but If you don’t attach work it’s ok. Submitting the application by September gives the best chance of getting in but we accept applications through the academic year and admit students as space is available. (*Only seniors applying to the Portfolio Preparation class must show work for review)
Should I apply to the Saturday Program if I’m an advanced student and already have a portfolio?
Absolutely! If you want intensive studio time in a single discipline or if you want to explore a new area. And if you’ll be a senior in September consider applying to Portfolio Preparation.
Can I apply if I have no art experience?
Yes! Many student come with little or no previous experience. With opportunity and guidance inexperienced students learn fast.
How can I apply to the Portfolio Preparation class?
You will have to fill out the written application and come in with your artwork, for a review on the 1st Saturday in October. The class runs for 2 semesters but students are only accepted in the fall.
Whats a Portfolio?
A Portfolio is a collection of your artwork. You don’t need a black case - just keep work neat and flat if possible. Work doesn’t have to be matted. You should include school work and personal projects. Variety is a plus. Not all the work must be ‘finished’. Try to include drawing from observation. Most work should be original -not copied. Photography can be shown as art. Digital work may be printed out (or bring a lap top to reviews). Murals, large sculpture or performance art may be shown as photos or printouts. Other creative or design projects in non art materials may be included. Usually don’t show work more than 3-4 years old. Note: different schools may be interested in different kinds of work.
